MAKE IT, MEND IT, MAIL IT (2020)

Make It, Mend It, Mail It was an offline, collaborative textile project that took place between September 2020 and June 2021. It facilitated asynchronous conversation between 44 participants across the US. Participants selected a textile object that would be manipulated by three unknown collaborators over the course of three months. Each participant also created a prompt or set of instructions to guide creative contemplation and alteration of the object. Every month a different collaborator had access to the object, making additions and changes while referencing the original prompt. The project ended when the textiles returned to their original senders.

Make It, Mend It, Mail It was created in response to the need for social distancing, while continuing to foster community building, skill and idea exchange, and dedication to a collective making practice. This project was an iteration of Make It, Mend It Club - a community space for textile creation, inquiry, and repair. Co-organized by Whitney Newton with ongoing support from the Textile Arts Center.
